Let me tell you the story about John (and yes this is based on a true story except that his name has been changed).

John was an entrepreneur; he had grand ideas, wonderful business contacts, and access to investment funds. How could he ever go wrong?

John liked to own pubs. In fact he owned 3 of them and was the perfect host. People flocked to his Hotels from all over Sydney. Some for the great music, some for the first class food and some to play the poker machines in his super cool gaming room.

In fact in his heyday, John would be making almost 40% more revenue than any of his closest competitors.

Today John is in his mid-sixties, bankrupt and working in a takeaway shop in an industrial estate and is a broken man.

How many times are employers at the beck and call of their employees? Every day you say?

John didn’t realise that little by little his employees were asking for more and more. Some were asking for time off, others were asking for bonuses and pay rises.

Although they were individually little increases, across his payroll it started to amount to a lot of money.

John had no rules by which to control his employees and little by little they started to take his hard earned money away. Poor old John, as he simply believed as long as everyone worked hard there would be enough money to go around.

Look after your finances and your finances will look after you!

Most businesses don’t operate with a business plan, let alone a budget. Most business struggle to get their management accounts and BAS returns to the tax office every quarter.

Think of a budget as a set of architect’s plans. You wouldn’t expect a builder to start building a new house without a set of plans; yet every day people are trying to build their business with no plans.

John was one of these guys. He had no business plan and no budget.  Why did he need a budget if everything was going so well?

If he had a budget he would have easily seen how quickly his business was heading off course.

He would have seen his wages mounting out of control; he would have seen which of his customers were bad customers and which of his suppliers were taking him for a ride.

Sell and when you’ve done selling then sell some more

Your competitors never stop selling. There is always someone out there trying to outsell you at any time.

John got a bit lazy with all the business he was bringing in and started to take it for granted. His hotels were full every weekend and there was a line of people trying to get in. Why would he want to advertise and market for more people?

Right around the corner was a hotel which was bought by a few young guys in partnership. Their plan was to market using social media and by using SMS. They quickly stole the younger crowd from John and bit by bit were making an indent into all of his patrons.

John didn’t even understand social media and except for one ad in the local paper which he had for years, he did absolutely nothing. As he lost business there was no avenue for attracting any new business.

Take yourself seriously and everyone else will too

John had a bad telephone manner and so didn’t notice when his employees had a bad telephone manner as well. So the first thing a customer heard was an arrogant and detached person on the other side of the telephone. What a terrible start to a business conversation?

Also messages were never delivered promptly, kitchens were left dirty, toilets were messy and bit by bit the whole business started to look like it was in a state of shambles.

There was no pride in what he was doing anymore.

Even his computer back-ups started to fall behind and that was an accident ready to happen.

Eventually poor old John was hit by the anti-smoking legislation and many of his patrons left him. He never got his costs down quick enough to match the decline in sales and eventually couldn’t pay his bills on time, nor pay his taxes on time and eventually even his workers were left without being paid.

The bank appointed Receivers and the hotels were sold at a price to just cover the loan to the bank leaving John with absolutely nothing to show for his 40 years of work.
